Editor’s note: Thanks to all the new subscribers who joined after reading my piece on career games. I’m grateful you’re here.

The tawdry affair, the new hairstyle, the red Corvette—we all recognize the trappings of the midlife crisis. According to this week’s author, the midlife crisis “unfolds amid suburban ennui. Disaffected adults feel trapped by conformity and the circumstances of marriage, children and a well-appointed house with a lawn that needs mowing every Saturday.”

But for many millennials now in their 40s, their entire adult lives have seemed like one long crisis. Without a “bourgeois numbness to rebel against,” they find themselves in the body of someone who is middle-aged with the bank account and mental constitution of someone in their 20s. What does midlife look like for a generation that feels like they’ve fallen behind?

Last year, The Times asked 1,300 readers in their 40s how they felt about their lives. The result is this week’s fascinating article about what happens when the expectations and realities of adulthood collide.

Here’s the piece: This isn't what millennial middle age was supposed to look like

Book updates:
  • I got my first review! Publishers Weekly wrote Stolzoff’s “straight-shooting style makes for a blistering takedown of American corporate culture. Workaholics would do well to check this out." 😊

  • I’m organizing a small “street team” of folks to help get the word out about the book launch, and I’d love for you to join.

  • Joining the street team will require <1 hour of work, and you’ll get a FREE copy of The Good Enough Job two months before it comes out.

  • If you’re willing to help, simply reply “I’m in!” to this email.

Warmly,
Simo

P.S. The song of the week is my favorite instrumental track to listen to as I work. The full songs of the week playlist is here.
